This is an archival PRINT of an original painting by artist Belinda Joynes. The original painting was based on the concept of an Earth Mother: "Archaeological evidence from around the prehistoric world suggests that the Earth may have once been viewed/worshipped as a living, female being. Ancient texts and mythologies support this idea. The worship of the Earth-mother was a common belief before the more recent development of the patriarchal society (c. 3,000 BC), coinciding with a shift in focus from Lunar to Solar worship across Neolithic Europe. This work is also inspired by the Thrombolites at Lake Clifton, which are linked to the beginning of life on Earth. The thrombilites are part of her dress and she is part of our waterways and the earth around us."
